This arterial road was built in the 1920s and its general layout remained unchanged until the 50s/60s when the carriagway was dualled as traffic increased. This removed much of the "parkway" green verges at each side of the road, but did allow the necessary room for that expansion. The same applied to the Watford By Pass(A41), a few miles down the road. '
