Chancel Lane Church of England School demolished in 1960 because it had developed serious structural problems.Some of our classrooms had coal fires and on cold days we were allowed to take turns in sitting by them whilst doing our reading.

St Teresa's Roman Catholic Church, built between 1911 and 1914 to a design by William Gillow. The church is in the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

Green Lane, which joins the other end of Grove Street, forming an early by pass to the shopping street. On this road a small washing house formed the foundations of the Umbro sportswear brand.

This grassy river meadow remains parkland and a pleasant walk to Styal on the left. The area is here known as The Carrs, from that well known Norse word Kjarr - meadow recovered from bog. Parts of the lower land can still be boggy.

Later this garden had a police station and magistrates court built on it- they are now closed and demolished and the area is open once more, but without the lovely garden.

The Police Station is actually shown in this view adjacent to the garden, and has now been replaced by a nondescript apartment block.

This building became Williams and Glyns Bank, later Williams Deacons Bank, later Royal Bank of Scotland, soon to be Santander.

At the time of this image, Williams Deacons Bank. Later Williams and Glyn's, then Royal Bank of Scotland.



The sale to Santander fell through. The sale of the English branches of RBS to somebody remains a commitment.
