Dungarvan ("Fort of Garbhan")is the administrative centre for County Waterford, as well as being a market town, small industrial centre and seaport on the west shore of the Colligan Estuary, 27 miles SW of Waterford City. The town grew up in the shelter of an Anglo-Norman castle and it reached its peak population of 8,600 in 1841, partly owing to its significance as a British army garrison. The settlement was once described in the mid-19th century as "a poor fisher town", but the arrival of the railway in 1878 brought renewed growth and the declining population stabilised to about 5,000 (Census in 1936 recorded 5,360 inhabitants) for the next hundred years. |
