Kilkenny Castle dates from the 13th century and stands on an eminence overlooking the River Nore at the south-east corner of the old town. William the Marshal's fortress was a trapezoid enclosure with a massive drum tower at each corner, which survived intact until the 17th century. After a lengthy period of decay, the castle was substantially rebuilt in the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Source: Shell Guide to Ireland, Killanin & Duignan, Ebury Press, 1962. |
