Bathrock Shelter erected about 1924. This building survived the great storm of 1938 which caused a lot of damage to the promenade and the buildings facing it. In the great storm of January 2014 this building succumbed, as the sea pushed a hole in the rock wall underneath, removed the infill and the shelter subsided through the hole.

Beneath the shelter was a rubble infill which was lost when the sea punched a hole in the enclosing stonework. The rubble was filling a former bathhouse, open around 1810 til nearly the end of the 19thC, where sea water was heated and available as a warm seawater bath or shower for those unable to enter the cold sea.

The shelter was due for demolition around 2010 together with its sister shelter at the other end of the prom. The smaller shelter was demolished and replaced with a more modern structure but a week before this larger structure was to be demolished it was listed.

The shelter damaged in the storm of January 2014 was removed for repair.

In Aberystwyth, we have invited a group of schoolchildren to draw inspiration from Aerofilms images of 1920s-30s Aberystwyth, to imagine how the city might look in 80 years time!
