17th Century hotel on the edge of the Rheidol Gorge. Ponterwyd, Aberystwyth, Dyfed, SY23 3AD A mid-Wales hotel named after an Englishman? George Borrow was an author. Amongst his works are a translation of Ellis Wyn's "The Sleeping Bard" (Gweledigaethau y Bardd Cwsg) and his travel book "Wild Wales" (1862). Borrow learned Welsh "self taught" and wandered on foot in Wales one year but did not later return. During his travels he stayed at this hoten in 1854 when it was called the GOGERDDAN ARMS HOTEL but not to be confused the the present pub of that name in Aberystwyth at Llanbadarn Fawr which was built 1827. George Borrow referred to the location as Pont Erwyd. He wrote of his visit to this hotel in Chapter 82 of Wild Wales.
