Rail siding buffer ramps - A group of six objects can be seen in modern satellite views and LIDAR mapping. These are the terminations of multiple parallel sidings opening from a single spur connection to the branch railway line to the west of Connel Ferry Station. Built for the Admiralty in 1940 as backup support of the marine minefield laid between NW Scotland and Iceland in early WW2. The Achaleven Sidings were also used to service the RAF Air Ammunition Park (AAP) operated by No 224 Maintenance Unit of 42 Group.
Sidings were lifted in 1948 (?). Present day, 2001, the entry spur is overbuilt with housing but traces of the parallel sidings are evident. |

In 1940 the Admiralty paid £15,700 for sidings somewhere in this area, it is not clear whether used for storing ammunition or fuel and some suggest they were used by the RAF rather than Admitalty. |
