56-64 Kingston Street, This warehouse was built in 1878 for William Hayman of Thomas Hayman & Son, cartage contractors and general storekeepers. It was close to Glasgow Harbour, and was probably designed to store imported produce. One of the very few buildings still standing

54-60 Broomielaw, Glasgow This large and imposing warehouse was built in 1878 for J & P Hutchison, shipping agents for a large number of foreign ports. They presumably used this building for collecting goods for shipment until suitable vessels were available, and for storing incoming goods until they were collected.

March 1960: This warehouse contained more than a million gallons of whisky and rum. This burned out of control for several hours, as off-duty firefighters from Glasgow and surrounding brigades were called in to assist. Tragically, when the spirit casks began to rupture, a massive explosion blew out the front and rear walls, killing 19 Fire Service and Salvage Corps men.

I think this is the famous "King Edward" of 1901, the first commercial turbine steamer in the world. She was withdrawn from service at the end of the 1951 season and would be broken up in 1952. The trees in the distance seem to be in leaf so this photo was not taken in December!
