One of the larger examples of the Great Eastern Railway's canopies, with ridges and valleys across the island platform, a design that replaced the relatively simple flat canopies that are seen here attached to the main station building. The northern extension of this canopy around the bay platforms, for the branch trains, is also in the later style.

Evidence if a large amount of cattle traffic.

It looks as if some vans and a coach are being attached/detached at the rear of a London bound train. The only problem is that there is no visible engine at the London end of the train. Perhaps it is just a shunting move to get some coaches ready for a London train!
