Site of joiners workshop 'Harrop and Brown' from where I would push my hand cart loaded with tools, ladders and materials to work on most of the building seen in this photograph. In those days I could travel around Ashton, with my hand cart, faster than I can in a car today.

Courthart Street, with Hibbert's Jewelers on one corner and the Union Club on the other. The Club building is still standing and looking very much the same to this date. Don't tell the local planning department or they could decide to pull it down?

Foundations of Old Charlestown demolished about 1932. Prefabs were built here during the 2nd World War where the Briggs family lived in the 1950's, They looked after me whilst my mother worked at Carlsons near to Gatefield School

Ellias Wilde builders merchants before they moved to Queen Street about 1963 when this area was compulsory purchased to make way for Metrolands Development who built the Ladysmith Shopping Center. This was to change the face of Old Ashton forever.

Ernest Crawley was the keeper of the gas works and lived there with his wife Kathleen until it closed down. They were both from London and Ernie and Kath lived there with their daughter Margie and their son Jim who lived his whole life in Ashton as did Margie who now lives in Stalybridge.

The far left shows some houses on Tatton St. and Delamere St. North

The place I was born and a place which I have 3 or 4 vivid memories.

This is the Ashton I remember from the 1950s. It was only in the late 60s-early 70s that the face of Ashton was changed radically.
