Location of 'Metropole Cinema'...originally 'The New Star Theatre of Varieties', opening in 1883, altered and extended and reopening in 1886 as 'The Queen's Theatre and Opera House'. Early 1900s renamed 'Metropole Theatre' under new management and became a cinema in 1911. ABC took it over in 1929 and by an independent operator in 1938. Clifton Cinemas took over in 1939, closed when hit twice, by bombing, in 1941 causing extensive damage. Demolished in 1952 and an Art Deco style hotel built in 1953, later becoming the YMCA, and a homeless hostel. Now 'The Snow Hill'

'BISHOP'S HOUSE'......Designed by Augustus Welby Pugin in 1840 as the residence of Thomas Walsh, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Birmingham. It was across the road from St Chad's Cathedral, on the corner of Bath Street and Weaman Street. The house was demolished in 1959, after Birmingham City Engineer (Herbert Manzoni....and the City Council) demanded that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham pay for any alterations necessary to the city's inner ring road scheme in order to preserve the building. A Pugin design ....lost forever!!!!!
