If anyone remembers the names of the two pleasure boats in the picture, which were probably requisitioned for War Service, around 27/28/29th May, 1940; and possibly sent to Dunkirk, it would be very helpful to know their Names, and the names of their Owner/Operators. From the whole of the Southend area Foreshore from Shoebury to Canvey, the Navy requisitioned 25 pleasure boats on 27th and 28th May, 1940, and 5 small motor yachts; as well as the Lifeboat "Greater London". Those local small craft that survived service during the Dunkirk Evacuation, were nearly all retained for further war service as "Naval Patrol" or "Harbour Auxiliary" vessels; and those that survived THAT service were returned to their Owners after VE Day, 1945, [frequently having suffered appalling neglect in Naval hands, since the Navy regarded them as "disposable"]. |
