PECKFORTON CASTLE Stone House Lane, Tarporley, Cheshire, CW6 9TN Now a hotel. Grade 1 listed building. English Heritage Building ID: 56862. Peckforton Castle was designed by Anthony Salvin and built for Sir John Tollemache MP (the first Lord Tollemache) around 1844-50. The last member of the Tollemache family to live in the castle was Lord Bentley; he left Peckforton and took up residence in Eastbourne in 1939. The "moat" never held water. The huge inner gatehouse leads one into the inner bailey at an elevation of about 450 feet above sea level. There is a chapel to the south and the main range of buildings to the north. The castle was bought in 1988 by Evelyn Graybill, who converted it into a hotel. In 2006 it was purchased by the Naylor family, who expanded its use to include hosting weddings, conferences, and other functions.
