Could these be gun emplacements? They appear today on google maps quite clearly. |

Here's the record for Culver Down Battery, dates from 1906. There were some really interesting guns up here. http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?a=0&hob_id=461925&rational=m&maplat=50.66553528&maplong=-1.09644775&mapist=os&mapilo=-1.0964&mapila=50.6655&mapiloe=w&mapilan=n&mapios=SZ638855&mapigrn=85550&mapigre=463850&mapipc=&mapisa=1000&recordsperpage=10&sort=2 |

Yes my friend, this fantastic photo shows the 9.2" guns of Culver Battery and its associated buildings. This area was closed to the public until 1956 and all photos of battery before its demolition are very rare. |

Hi HALLY64 - didn't the two really big guns have nicknames? I can't remember. Katy |

Hi Katy, the guns were not nicknamed publicly as far as I know but would almost certainly have been named by their crews. |

Thanks - I couldn't remember quite what it was I had read, or whether it was in relation to WWI or WWII either. Must go and look it up! |

The 9.2" guns of Culver Battery. Built between 1904/06 and in service with various armament until 1956. Bembridge Fort can also just be made out at the top of this photo. This is where the troops who manned the battery where stationed. |
