The old main stand is history. It was condemned as unsafe in 2008 and was gradually dismantled until 2013/14 when it was demolished and replaced by a new East Stand. |

The Refuse Destructor chimney was built in 1903 and lasted for 44 years before it was demolished after developing a Pisa-type lean! |

Watford Power Station |

This small generating power station was constructed in 1897 and was extended in the late 1930s and again in the 1950s. However, it was seen to be uneconomic in the succeeding decade and was eventually closed in 1968. The site was cleared for a new gas/oil fuelled power station on Cardiff Road in 1974/78, but this was used only as a stand-by facility and this was also demolished, some time in the 1990s. The area is now the Cardiff Road Industrial Estate. In the meantime, an electricity transmission station has been built at the west end of Riverside Road. |

As of October 2013 the old main stand is in the process of being dimantled, and a new metal frame stand is being erected. The first part of which will be in use in early 2014. |

This is a rare view of the famous stadium at Vicarage Road and the home of Watford FC for about ten years when this picture was taken. It's also worthy of inclusion in other groups on this website, such as "Football Grounds". In the background is the 1897 electricity generating station, with coal brought in from the north Midlands, via a railway siding, which served the town until the late 1960s, when it was demolished in favour of a new gas/oil power station. |

A view looking south over the home of Watford Town Football Club, where the ground at Vicarage Road has been in use since 1922. Following the Local Government Act of 1929, Watford Union Workhouse, founded on this site in 1838, became Shrodells Public Assistance Institution, under the control of Watford Borough Council. Further expansion took place in the Wartime Emergency Scheme and Shrodells became a large hospital, with 464 general beds, under the NHS in 1948. Over sixty years later, Watford General Hospital is set to become a Health Campus for the region. |
