This area eventually got filled in with ash from Stuart street power station, up to the level of the houses to the right (Vale street). A school was built on it later. The ash was still having outbreaks of smouldering and fire in the early 70's. The northern edge of the fill became known as 'Death Hill' to those who, like me, rode our dirt bikes on the Vale in the 70's. It was a hard thing to get up, and 95% of the time attempts would result in a dismount, falling back down, being chased by ones machine, ending in a heap at the bottom, sometimes with injuries.
