Attached is a scan of part of an 1863 map showing the Metropolitan Cattle Market. The following are some details about the market from a leaflet supplied with the maps from Old House Books: The Metropolitan Cattle Market, between Islington & Camden Town, the livestock & meat market of London, was erected in 1854-5, after a long parliamentary struggle with the Corporation of London, and publicly opened by Prince Albert, 13 June, 1855. The market occupies 30 acres, and is said to have cost at least £300,000. The average weekly sale of beasts is about 3000; and of sheep about 30,000, increased in the Christmas week to about 5000 beasts and 50,000 sheep. |
