Strictly speaking the Somerset and Dorset was a joint enterprise between the Midland Railway and the London and South-Western Railway, who leased it in 1875 from the original and virtually bankrupt S&D company! In 1930, the Southern Railway took over the infrastructure and signalling, and the LMS supplied locomotives and operated the trains. British Railways eventually closed the whole line in 1966.
