Horace - I would like to find out more about the old Rodway Hill course, perhaps you can add; I was told there was a green down by the railway bridge, the 18th tee is still visible as well. The course was 18 holes from 1898 to about 1920, then it was back to 9 holes. One of holes went to Shortwood, and from the pictures there seems possibly holes where Fairlyn Drive is now. Would be nice to find more pics. Adrian. |

I have a feeling you are looking at this the wrong way around. Where you have your pin is now the charnhill housing estate. The old golf course is where i have put a pin and the new mangotsfield golf course is basically below you. |

I have found out more. The 18 hole course closed at about the time of the first world war, the first nine holes were played on the land from the school, down to the Bridge Inn and back up on the area now the Sports fields. These holes got ploughed up, the remaining holes were mainly played over Charnhill (six of the holes) and (three holes) over Rodway Common. You can see the tee for the Donga Hole which played down to a green near the arched bridge. If anyone has a plan or more info I would love to see a copy. Adrian@theplayersgolfclub.com |
