the hylton and wearmouth line which joined the leamside line at southwick junction and ran to wearmouth colliery the A1231 now follows this route.

east pit winder house these winder houses were so well built they could not be demolished conventionally and had to be drilled and fired down with explosives.

The colliery was on the north bank of the Wear, a couple of miles west of central Sunderland. It closed in 1979. The site is now a business park.

started work here at 16 yrs.closed in 1979,is now a retail and business enterprize park
