Castle Hill (the various allusions to "Castle" in placenames in this part of Ringway, and also immediately across the Bollin in adjacent areas of Ashley, probably allude to an early Norman motte and bailey fortification, thought to be roughly under Castle Hill Farm (the one on the southern, Ashley side of the Bollin, not the farm of the same name on the opposite bank in Ringway). They seem to date from the early days of the occupation of the area by the Norman de Masci family, who gave their name to Dunham Massey where they finally settled. There's another similar motte and bailey castle site at Watch Hill on the northern bank of the Bollin, close to the A56 Watling Street bridge at Bowdon.
