Also known, at different times, as Redbrook House (late 19th/early 20th centuries) and Rimmersdale (1950s-60s). The property is named York House on the "Geographia" local street map published in the early 1950s, presumably based on information gathered somewhat earlier.

I haven't been that way for many years - Brook's Drive was never car-friendly even in the 1960s when I was young! - but the modern map suggests that every old property in the immediate area, including this one, has now been demolished and replaced by streets of small modern houses.

I believe my father was stationed here during the war and would like to have a photo of the house.

Might not be easy - the house was pulled down a long time ago, certainly within a decade from the end of the war. I was born in 1945 and grew up about a mile away, and it'd gone by the time I was old enough to take notice. Although it was a substantial house, I don't think it was ancient, and I never recall seeing a picture of it. I do seem to recall, though, that its very substantial gateposts remained in place for a good many years, just on the bend which was created at the southern end of Brooklands Road when the roundabout was constructed.

Is this the same house John? This is just about 100M from the path connecting Shady Lane to the industrial estate.

No: the house in your picture (I don't recall if it had a name, and if it had, it isn't identified on any of the maps I've seen) used to stand on the south-western side of Shady Lane, which once ran on a fair bit further on a route which is now under the units of the present Roundthorn industrial estate, joining Floats Road at a point pretty much exactly where Dallimore Road meets Ledson Road. Roundthorn Farm was opposite, roughly where Sidcup Road joins Ledson Road. When I was really small (around the very early '50s) I seem to remember a small wooden lock-up general store right on the corner of Floats Road and Shady Lane, near the finger post!



Whereas Baguley House was a large Victorian businessman's country house at the north-east corner of the junction of Brooklands Road with Altrincham Road, at Baguley roundabout - behind where "Baguley Cottage" stands now. The large trees in the grounds to the left as you approach the roundabout from Brooklands Road used to surround its entrance.
