Hill Carter Department Store on the corner of Whitby & Church Streets, created in 1898 and noted for the quality of its upholstery, drapery and clothing departments. Around 1940 it became Blackett's, which lasted for thirty years before becoming the Dovecot Salerooms. After refurbishment, the building became the Hill Carter Hotel in 1997.
