Wapping Old Stairs, the site of Execution Dock where many a scurvy buccaneer danced the Marshal's dance at the end of a short rope. Tradition has it that their bodies were left until three tides had washed over them. The bodies of the worst pirates were tarred and hung in chains at either Cuckold's Point or Blackwall Point further downstream on the River Thames - as a warning to seafarers about the Admiralty's attitude to piracy. |
