Laporte's came to Luton as an ancillary to the hat industry. They produced peroxide, for the bleaching of straw plait used in the manufacture of straw hats for which Luton was well known. When built, the factory was in the open countryside because of the strong smell of bleach it gave off. However Kingsway is now well within the built-up area. |
