ST 55 NE COMPTON MARTIN C.P. BICKFIELD LANE (north side) 5/80 Moat Farmhouse 21.9.60 II Farmhouse. Late mediaeval origin, probably fmmerly larger, with wing to left and porch of C15, with later alterations and additions, including Cl7 and C19 alterations. Rubble, rendered, limestone dressings, double Roman tiled roofs with raised coped verges and stone gable stacks, ridge stack to right of porch; some pantiles. Irregular plan, former through passage. Front of 2 storeys and 4 bays; from left, projecting wing has blocked pointed arched window in limestone surround to left of stack at first floor, at ground floor level, stack projecting; inner side of wing has ground floor C20 2-light casement with part of hood mould remaining from former window, to right, half of 4-centred arched door architrave, blocked by 2nd bay, at first floor a 3-light C19 casement under eaves; battered walls. 2nd bay has ground and first floor 3-light C20 casement. 3rd bay formed by 2-storey gabled porch, with large 4-centred arched opening, surround of 2 chamfered orders and stopped hood mould, inside porch, bench to each side, blocked window to left, triangular-headed door in moulded surround with quatrefoils carved in spandrels. 4th bay has lower roof ridge with pantiled catslide roof to front, with small C20 light under eaves; attached to right and projecting, single storey outhouse, not rendered, pantiled roof, with door and 4-pane light. Left return (of wing) has central blocked large 4-centred-arched chamfered opening with buttress to each side and C20 repair work to lintel, 3-light pointed arched window inserted in doorway, also blocked; to right, a 3-light pointed arched window with cusped trefoil heads and chamfered mullions, to left a small blocked pointed arched window, possibly former stair light, buttress and blocked rectangular window; first floor has two 3-light casements under eaves, to left C19 wood, to right with chamfered stone mullions. Rear (of wing) has low buttress, segmental- headed door and small 2-light window, small single light in moulded frame at first floor. Rear of central 2 bays has from left, former rear passage door with 3-pane light inserted and C20 timber lintel with buttress to left and C19 2-light casement at first floor; central narrow gabled wing with stack, to right a single storey lean-to with 3-light cusped trefoil-headed window above. Rear of lower wing has 4-pane C19 sash. Right return, not rendered, has C20 2-light casement in gable end and door to left; attached outhouse has catslide roof and 2-light casement under eaves, outhouse has 2 gable ends to front. Interior: ground floor front room in wing to left formerly had framed ceiling in 4 panels, one cambered moulded beam remaining, stone fireplace in end wall with cambered moulded head, repaired chamfered mullions to cusped window, external walls about one metre thick, winder stair to rear of wing; at first floor, inner wall has stone panels with blank shields, coved cornice and principal roof members rising from corbels, 4 bays of roof visible, tie-beam, arched-brace, cambered collar, 2 rows of purlins with one windbrace remaining. Central bays at ground floor have deep-chamfered beams with bar and run-out stops; room to right of passage has narrow-chamfered beams with run-out stops.
