I think this boom is for the cable towing a "ships log". The Ships movement through the sea turned, what looked like a small propeller, at the end of the cable. The revolutions were transmitted to the bridge where it recorded the distance covered, for a given time.

SS Denis 2 completed in March 1949 at George Clark Ltd, Sunderland. Presumaby this is one of its first sea trials, so probably off the North East coast, backed up by the pit spoil tip which was acommon site down the coast here.

A colliery waste tip near the sea should narrow this one down.

I have had a good look at this one and I am no further forward.

There are no features which I can recognise. Some of the Durham collieries such as Easington were renowned for dumping the colliery waste in the sea so would not have had waste tips. Someone with local knowledge might be able to make something of this.

Hullo folks,

The original Aerofilms Ltd Register entry reads "Wm. Pickersgill & Sons Ltd., SS "Denis" on trials off North East Coast". But I'm not convinced by Seaham. Any other suggestions?
