Top end of Honey Hill Road. The building that can be seen close to the river was a Cafe. My grandparents rear garden came down from Honey Hill Road, and stopped close to this Cafe and the River Ouse. |

Thanks to a recent talk by David Fowler in our local library, I have since learnt that this hall was originally The Hawkins Memorial Hall. It was built by Hester Hawkins in memory of her husband Joshua Hawkins who was mayor of Bedford several times. Hester was an astronomer; more details on her can be seen at http://bedsastro.org.uk/bedford-astronomical-society-hester-hawkins. For a picture of Joshua, see www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/joshua-hawkins-18451892-mayor-of-bedford-18831884-1887188848072. |
