This is where the 'Dilly' coal line crossed the main road at Bill Quay. The coal wagons dropped down the hill from Springwell using gravity. To stop them going too fast they were controlled by a wire rope . Once emptied at the Pelaw Main Staiths they were hauled back up to Springwell. Photos on my website www.gatesheadeast.co.uk

This section of the Co-op which ran all along the North side of Shields road, was the Shirt Factory. Photos on my website www.gatesheadeast.co.uk The Town of Pelaw didnt exist in the 1800s. When the Co-operative decided to come here, that's when houses were built for workers. If the Co-op hadnt came, there might have been no Pelaw.
