The tender on this loco has a tank instead of coal. It is one of the oil burning locos of this time which was also tried by the other three companies and not found to be successful.

At nationalisation in January 1948 there were almost 50 Stanier 2-8-0s based at Toton shed.

At this time most of the ex LMS Beyer-Garratt locomotives were shedded at Toton for the Toton to Brent coal trains.

They were being replaced with the Stanier 2-8-0 locos and later with the BR 2-10-0 s.
