This was a cheap Doss House where very poor people could have a night under cover . There wer no beds and they had to sleep standing up hanging over a rope. This is where the term I could sleep on a clothes line came from. Here is a pic to show its true.

Whites Marine offices and main gate alongside Prince Consort Rd. My mother was born 1922 and she told me that times were hard and sometimes she'd stand outside Whites at 'knocking off time' hoping for uneaten 'bait' (sandwiches) off the workmen.

As a young girl in the late 1920s early 1930s my mother (born 1922) lived here at 2 Cuthbert St. It was upstairs and above the Relief Office which was similar to the Dole. Once a week the out of work men would form a long queue in the back yard and out into the lane. As the entrance to the upstairs was by an outside wooden staircase, my Gran never went out those days. She was a very shy lady and didn't like having to wind her way past all those men.

The Commercial Hotel on Lyon St/Ellison St corner.

The Albert Hotel built 1882 after Queen Victoria's husband. It was on Albert St/William St corner. It was renamed 'Wardles' in later times.

This was the General Post Office on Ellison St.

Lamport St. Not many house were in this street. On one side was the wall alongside the Ballast Hill. Mostly just gable ends were in this street. It was also an access road to the Gear Works .

William St another long street that ran from Prince Consort back lane to Dunston St crossing numerous other streets.

Cuthbert St which was a long street. It ran from Prince Consort Rd and ended at McIntyre St crossing over Bewick St, Albert St, Ellison St, Tyne St, Caledonian St.

Railway Terrace which was roughly where Lyon St ended and Waggonway Rd started (opposite the Quay Board School)

Wailes Dove Bitumastic factory sandwiched between Hedgeley Road and the South Shields to Newcastle railway lines

Tennant St which was a main shopping street in Hebburn Newtown.The street was named because Charles Tennant brought his Chemical Works to Hebburn hence we also had Charles St and St Rollox St. His main works were in the St Rollox area of Glasgow.

The Ellison House Hotel on Lyon St/ Prince Consort Rd corner. It was badly damaged when the Theatre next door was burned down in October 1950. It was later reopened but not for long due to redevelopment of the area..

This was the Council Yard which was bombed during WW2 and quite a number of men were killed.

Hedley Schools which were opened in 1882 and are still being used today in 2016 as a church hall.

Bewick St which led from Argyle St down to Lyon St. It cut across Cuthbert and William st.

Hood St

This gap in the Ann St houses is where a German bomb hit a few years earlier. The gap was never built on and is still there today.

Prince Consort Rd Nursery School

Williamson & Corder plant known as 'The Bone Yard'. When the wind blew towards Hebburn there was a horrible smell that came over from the yard. Animal carcases were boiled up to make fertilisers.gelatine, glue, grease, oil, alkalis, soaps, chemicals etc'.

What locals called 'Bottom Reyrolles' . Reyrolles made electrical switchgear & started in Hebburn about 1902 when Alphonse Reyrolle came to start his business. At it's peak Reyrolles employed 11,000 people, possibly more. My father worked for them for 48 yrs & they were a very good firm to work for.

This bare looking land in 1947 was where the Tennant's Chemical Works had been since mid 1800s. It later became the United Alkali Co. My rare photo of it is from my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk

My photo shows the Tharsis Sulpher & Copperworks chimney which was 190ft high to enable dangerous fumes to disperse easier

We called this the Copperworks Pond. It was a manmade brick lined reservoir & after Tharsis pulled out of Hebburn the reservoir remained unfenced, deep & dangerous. A lad called Colqhoun born about 1944 drowned in it about 1950. It was a magnet for us kids catching little fish called sticklebacks.

This land became the Towns rubbish tips. Many years later it was covered over with earth & soil & landscaped. Today the area is beautiful but not in the 40s & 50s;.

This was a wooden bridge to allow a rail track to get to the Staiths over the bottom riverside road. The rare photo of the bridge is from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website. As a little lad this area was our playground & we often clambered around inside this bridge. In those days late 1940s the bin wagons came along this road & through the bridge to the Town's Rubbish tips

The site of the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co who only operated in Hebburn from 1919 to 1921 when they went bust.

This factory was known as the 'Bauxite' & not much is known about it. Bauxite is aluminium ore so aluminium must have been made here. The area around the factory was poisoned with this waste reddish oxide & mounds of it was left when they closed down.

The Ballast Hill. My pic shows a Hebburn man on the top in 1951. During WW2 there were ack ack guns on the hill protecting the shipyards the Germans were trying to bomb.

This building is still standing in 2013 & has been a Funeral Home for quite a few years. When the aerial photo was taken it was 'Martin's Bank' later becoming 'Barclays. Prince Consort Rd formerly James St

This was a gear wheel & gearbox manufacturing factory. Originally the building was built for the Newcastle Shipbuilding Company who started off in 1919 but went bust in 1921. The Sheds & land leading to the riverside was auctioned off in 1925 but no one bought it. Items then were sold off gradually & cheaply & Gateshead company Reay Gear Works ended up with the Sheds & started off in the town. Later George Angus bought the Factory & continued Gear making. Later still Richardson Westgarth bought the factory calling themselves RW Transmissions. They closed down in the mid 1970s. Photo from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website

Co-op Store Hall on Lyon St-Albert St corner. It was a place where Dances were held & lots of locals met their partners there.

Hebburn's 'Theatre Royal' on Lyon St which opened in 1897 & burned down in 1950. Next door on the corner of Prince Consort Rd can be seen the Ellison House Hotel that was badly damaged in the 1950 fire. I lived across the road about 50 yds along Lyon St & as a 6 yr old watched the fire burning. I'd been looking forward to a further episode of a series & never saw it unfortunately.

Tyne View Tce which belonged to the Tennant's Chemical Works & used to house their management people. After the Chemical Works moved out the Terrace was rented out to a few families.
