Vernon Carus PR1 9SN Major manufacturers of surgical lint. Penwortham Mill, Factory Lane, was built in 1785 by John Watson - weaving and fabric production, originally water powered. Penwortham Workhouse (1796) was usefully close by on Greenbank Road for the supply of pauper child apprentices to the old 1785 mill. In the 1860's the workhouse was converted to a row of whitewashed cottages (now Manor Cottages). 1915- Mill purchased by Vernon Carus, who then moved into Penwortham Mill. They closed at this site in 2006 following a move to Matrix Business Park (PR7 7NB). There are plans for about 400 new homes on the site
