This was a wooden bridge over the railway line.
I used to stand on it as steam trains went under it. Very noisy, smelly and sooty. |

Redcar Racecourse, which replaced less formal racing on the beach, dates from 1872; a potted history can be found at http://www.redcarracing.co.uk/about/history. |

This building is all that remains of Coatham Pier and at the date of this image it was called the ''New Pavilion Theatre''. It did not become the ''Regent Cinema'' until 1964. The Wiki for image EPW038940 includes a potted history of Coatham Pier. |

I can say that I have skied completely round Redcar racecourse sometime around 1979. It must have snowed quite heavily on the coast and there was a sufficient snow cover that I was able to make this trip using my cross country skis. I wasn't on the racecourse but on the pavements of the public roads surrounding the course. |

The date given for this image is incorrect. The 17th August 1947 was a Sunday and Sunday racing did not start in England until a Doncaster meeting in 1992. Contemporary newspapers show that meetings at Redcar were held on the 18th and 19th August 1947In the absence of further information, I suggest that the most likely date was the 17th. |
