A G LINFIELD AND SONS- A G LINFIELD LTD FROM 1941 Looking from the North to the South, Thakeham is at the double bend in the road. The first site -from 1913- was Jack Willmers Nursery, Chesswood. Mushrooms were grown in low thatched sheds. This nursery also grew chicory, fennel, lettuce and until 1982 roses and carnations. Composting was in a large shed at Town House Farm, which caused a smell problem in the area. Composting ceased c 2012. The Abingworth nursery commenced 1945. In 2013 this site was derelict and plans were in hand to build a housing estate here. In 1986 Rushfield close to Chesswood, was growing roses. In 1960 the largest mushroom growers in Europe. In 2012 there were 400 employees here, by 2013, 292. In 2012 Sussex Mushrooms was acquired by Monaghan Mushrooms forming Thakeham Mushrooms. circa 2012 Abingworth was derelict and plans in hand for a housing estate Nearby on Merrywood Lane was Grade 1 property Little Thakeham. |
