The "Groatie Hoose" in its original location. When zoomed in you can just see the top of a small conical structure.
It was dismantled in 2005 and has been reconstructed in the garden of Tankerness House Museum, Broad Street, Kirkwall.
I first saw the Groatie Hoose in the 1970's when on a visit up the tower of St Magnus Cathederal. After making various enquiries, the late Miss Ellaine Bullard of Orkney Field Club introduced me to Ernest Marwick, who told me the story as set out on the following web page:-
http://www.spirit-of-orkney.com/contents1a/2010/05/groatie-hoose-kirkwall/
Following my conversation with Ernest and Ellaine, I got permission from the then owners of the site (Gardners soft drinks?) to go through and visit.
I am glad that it has been dismantled and reconstructed behind Tankerness House. |
