J L Dixons the department store opened 1914 closed 1973. This building was replaced in the 1930's and still stands on this location. The original frontage was changed in the early 70's before Dixons closed, and is now home to WH Smith and Burger King. J L Dixons were not the same company as Dixon Cameras, another Southend business which has gone onto become Dixons Carphonewarehouse, the owners of Currys PC World.

I was lucky enough to study here from 1963 to 1967. What wonderful place full of wonderful people and they had to knock it down for a roundabout! Tragic!
