The demolition of St Mary's ward started c1963 as part of the national slum clearance program. Over the next few years *1,014 houses were demolished and 931 families (2,431 people) were displaced .
Sadly this had a devastating effect on a once vibrant community and caused a lot of resentment with local people.
The clearances were subject to intense study, with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government commissioning and publishing two reports 'Living in a Slum' and '*Moving Out of a Slum'.
However the real impact of the clearances was best captured in a long forgotten 1963/64 documentary by Granada Television called 'The End of a Street' which gives a unique social insight from the residents themselves. '
