' Trackwork replacement, possibly in connection with the electrification of the line out to Shenfield which began before, but delayed because of, the war. Finally completed in 1949 this was overhead dc at 1500 volts - the same as the "Woodhead" line across the Pennines which was being electrified at the same time, by the LNER (which itself was a few months away from becoming the Eastern Region of British Railways).
