| The steamer is the Caledonian Steam Packet Co's DUCHESS OF FIFE, built in 1903. She carried winter boarding over her forward windows, and would be serving Millport and Kilchattan Bay (Isle of Bute) from Wemyss Bay and Largs. DUCHESS OF FIFE served as a minesweeper during the Great War and also took part at the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. She was broken up in 1953. |

 'Leisure time' was something that existing only for the very wealthy, until the social benefits of the Industrial Revolution began to be felt among first the middle, and then the working classes. The twentieth century saw the steady expansion of leisure time and a corresponding growth in leisure activities - such as sailing. This image shows the pier at Largs, a popular seaside holiday resort on the West central coast of Scotland, and the starting point for a number of cruises to nearby islands, such as the Isle of Bute (the destination for the paddle steamer in the photograph). |
