Cumnock Public School in Barrhill Road was erected in 1875 and cost £2700 - it officially opened on 6th October 1876. The architect was R S Ingram. The first "joint" headmasters were David Scott and Robert Brown. Mr Scott retired in 1892 and Mr Brown continued until 1899. John Dick was the next headmaster followed by Andrew Martin and John Edgar, the latter being also an ex-provost. The building was demolished in 1974.

Cumnock Academy in the Ayr Road was created out of the old Greenmill Primary School. The two schools swapped locations in 1969 - causing much confusion at the time. The buildings were erected (as Greenmill School) in 1952-54 and then extended in 1964 and 1970. The Social and Recreational Wing was added in 1971. It is capable of housing up to 1800 pupils. The Academy awards the annual Sir John Latta Dux Medal - named after a wealthy shipping magnate.

This is actually Cumnock. New Cumnock is a separate town south of Cumnock.
