These were the houses of people that worked at the factory. They were like pre-fabs. I assume they were for key workers. My uncle and his family lived in one. I stayed in Felsted as a child and played around the Sugar Beet factory.

These tracks form a branch of the Bishops Stortford to Braintree Railway (Formerly Great Eastern) which closed in the late 60's.

This later became a small reservoir for use by the Anglo-Scottish Sugar Company.

These were what were know as the Settling Ponds. The water was drained from washing the beet and I believe was warm as my mother used to swim in them as a child.

You say "Factory, Felsted, railway, Station road, sugar beet" so why do you also say "Title: Unlocated". You do have a reference for the Anglo Scottish Sugar Factory elsewhere... This is the same factory, later known as the BSC Felsted Sugar Factory, demolished in ca 1999.

Thomas - There was no official location given in the records and so the people scanning in the image put it as Unlocated. All the other information is supplied by us. If you look at the numbers for the other images of this site they are in no way related and so the person scanning in the image would not have a clue that the site was identified - also they will not have the time to look through every other image as they scan each image in.

Hi Dave and Thomas,

You got it in one, Dave, I couldn't have explained it better myself. There is no one member of the Project Team that sees every single image so there are instances where we have both "located" and "unlocated" images of the same site, often from different dates - but which will have been worked on by different people.

The original Aerofilms Ltd Register entry for this particular image simply says "cancelled", and the photographs either side in the numbering sequence are of locations in Hertfordshire and north London. Not very helpful for the cataloguers!

Once people have identified images like this one and put a pin in the map to set a new location, I and my colleagues can download the suggestions; we then check them and, if correct, update the catalogues and then put the new data online here. We do this on a generous timescale that allows lots of suggestions to be made, giving people time to corroborate one another's contributions or to debate the comments.

So please keep your suggestions coming! The online contributions are extremely valuable, we couldn't make these unlocated images more accessible and useful without your help.

Yours, Katy

Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader
