I worked on site as a tipper driver during the 70s, I worked for T J Riley of Loughborough Road. The filtration pits (round structures) were large and had to be cleaned out before being the site was terraced for houses, during the excavation of the site a lot of Victorian cast iron pipe 12 inches in diameter was dug up, we pooled the money we got for it (from Berry's scrap merchant) and had a settle up at the end of each week. My wage at the time as a self employed driver was £50 a week, the scrap most weeks doubled our wage. |
