The level crossing - cause of many a peak-time traffic queue until the new route for the A560 was carved out in the 1970s.

It's the Bricklayer's Arms - still there, and one of the few buildings on this bit of George Street which is little changed. If I remember rightly, the Malt Shovels was further north, nearer to the Hippodrome and the level crossing, just beyond the Altrincham public library and the old police lock-ups.

This was certainly Altrincham Library in the 1940s and 1950s -presumably also in 1928?

Was this the "Hippodrome"? I used to pass it at least once or twice a week fifty years ago, but the memory's fading! The other one was, I think, the "Picture Theatre", but I've no recollection where it was.

The railway sheds nearest the camera were originally Bowdon station but the terminus soon became Altrincham (by the taller building just above centre in the frame. Bowdon station was then the maintenance and storage area for the Oxford Road to Altrincham line. This was one of the first electric commuter railways in the country with an overhead catenary system at 1,600 Volt DC (direct current) which remained in service until around 1969. See Altrincham Electric Preservation Society for more information.
