I think this is William Street, (Or Billy Brew as we called it") ? I mention it my earlier comment about Schofield Walk.

As a Middletonian bred and born, I remember some paths and roads from my school days. The last time I visited Middleton, there was an overgrown pathway that was called Schofield Walk and I wanted to pin the name to it. To get to it you had to travel up "William Street", that we used to call, lovingly, "Billy Brew", because it was up a slope.

The moat. The rectory was once a semi-fortified building reputed to have had a draw bridge and loop holes for the discharge of weapons. Part of the moat can clearly be seen on this image. Medieval glass, now in the clerestory and Flodden window of St Leonard's church came from the rectory. Coats of arms are the subject of these glass panels. I believe that, with this and the fortification, the rectory was formerly Middleton's manor house. Probably when the Assheton family became lords of Middleton, they built their new manor house between what is now Market Place, Old Hall St and Tesco.

Mather and Ormisher's Mill. They made the cotton thread used to encapsulate the rubber sheath over electrical wire. PVC put an end to this.

The bowling green belonged to the Middleton Liberal Club on Long St., opposite the Assheton Arms Hotel. The baths were opened on the site in 1938.

Click on the "moat" pin to read details of the early fortification of the rectory. The rectory was "Victorianised" in the 1870s but has since had the embellishments taken away. The oak room remains the main feature in what was once a half-timbered building (bricks now hide the medieval work).
