John Manners-Sutton built the house in 1882 with the proceeds of a bet. He bet that he could buy a horse, train it and win the Grand National within twelve months. He did so, riding the horse Seaman by a short lead from the favourite.

His architect, W R Lethaby, designed the 'calendar house' for him - it has 365 windows, 12 chimneys, four wings, etc - in the Arts and Crafts style.

Bequeathed to the 'youth of the nation' in 1949, it is now run by a charity and used as an activity centre for young people
