Northumberland Village Homes aka the Naughty Girls School. Built in the 1880's as a home for destitute girls of good character to be trained in domestic service. This was the female equivalent of the Wellesley Training ship for boys. Built on land donated by the Duke of Northumberland and more purchased by public subscription. Several houses each with max. of 16 girls in each with a house mother and father to provide as "normal" a life style as possible. In addition to the houses there was also a school house, a laundry and a gardeners house. |
