Glasgow's electric street tramways commenced running in 1898. Route closures started in 1956 and the last trams ran early in September 1962. The tracks were built to the curious rail gauge of 1416mm instead of 1435mm. Railway wagons could then run in the slots of the tram tracks, on their flanges. This was beneficial for the network's neighbouring shipyards, enabling suplies to be brought in from nearby goods depots |
