Pollok brick works were owned by R & D Adam which also owned other brick works near Glasgow. The Pollok brick works ceased business in 1923 and in 1924 there was a sale of the equipment. The business ceased because the lease of the clay quarry was not renewed. The clay quarry was situated to the east of the brick works towards Corkerhill farm and north of the railway line. The significance of the brick works is that the tall chimney remained standing. In 1940 the Government was concerned of the threat of German bombing. The river Cart provided navigation assistance to the Germans as the river joined the Clyde at John Browns shipyard so Bombers could follow the river Cart to the shipyards. The old brick works chimney was close the the river Cart and the Government feared the chimney could be also be used as a navigation aid. The chimney was therefore destroyed in 1940. The brick works land was then used as an anti aircraft site with many guns. These were used during the Glasgow blitz of 1941 and later the Belfast blitz. |

Interesting point. I read that work began 1928 but that could be wrong. Stand cost £95,000 (!) & was officially opened on 1st January 1929. |
