Hamilton Electricity Works or HEW has undergone many changes and names since it was built in 1901 by the local building firm of Thomas Messom. It closed down in the 1960s as a modern sub station was built nearby and was then used for light industry. In 2005 it was sold to a private developer and plans were submitted to demolish and construct apartment blocks. These plans were fought by the local community and the council until a more favourable plan was submitted and accepted. Building work started in 2013 retaining as much of the original building as possible and a similar footprint. The site now known as Athelstan Place (Athelstan being the original name for Hamilton Road) will be ready for occupation in August/September 2015. For more details please see this website: https://hamiltonelectricityworks.wordpress.com - including links to the Facebook page which has several galleries of photographs. |
