Not so. Royle (not 'Royal') Green was the name of the small hamlet midway along Longley Lane, and Royle Green Road was the lane that linked it with Northenden village. Longley Lane itself takes its name from 'the three long leas', the 17th century name of fields adjoining the south side of the road between Royle Green and Wythenshawe Road.. |

My great grandfather used to live at Sharston Hall in the early 1900s, as he owned a dyeing and bleaching works nearby at Cheadle (Demmings works). His name was Robert Clay. Any more information on him would be welcome. Where is Sharston Hall site now? EVC |

@ EVC: the hall is still there, in part - see Cancan's post above. So is the old industrial site at Demmings Road in Cheadle, though I think the buildings are these days split up into small business units. For aerial photographs of the Demmings Dye and Bleaching Works as it was in August 1926, see image reference no's EPW016471 and EPW016473 on this site. |

The school closed after the opening of the new school in Northenden at the very start of the 20th century and by the time this photograph was taken, it had become a tea room for walkers and cyclists. Later the Sharston Hotel was built on the site, which is now subsumed under the M56 motorway. |
